SRH Law client Renoun Ski Company featured in Burlington Free Press

Posted on May 8, 2015 by SRH Law

An innovative new ski technology with Vermont roots was recently featured in the Burlington Free Press.

Meet Cyrus Schenck, 24, of Burlington, a college dropout and the founder of a ski company – Renoun – Posted by Burlington Free Press on Thursday, April 9, 2015

renoun Cyrus Schenck—SRH Law client, native of Shelburne and founder of the Renoun Ski Company—has designed a “hyper-dampening” ski that hardens rather than gives under pressure, eliminating the experience of skis “vibrating” on the snow. As Schenck explains:

If you zoom into an edge, vibration is just the bouncing of an edge on and off the snow. Think of that bouncing as something hitting the ski. It’s just an impact. So the harder that impact is, the more this stuff reacts to it and the more damp, in this case, it becomes.

The effect is achieved with a kind of putty with unique properties that Schenck and several friends learned about at Clarkson University, where he was studying aeronautical engineering. The idea evolved into a ski industry startup, which has since been selected as a finalist in the 2015 LaunchVT Competition for startups and among the top five contenders at the 2015 Peak Pitch competition.

After Renoun won the gold in the All-Mountain Ski category at the 2015/16 ISPO Munich awards for sporting goods, Schenck sought to protect his innovative use of non-Newtonian materials in skis and snowboards. Schenck filed a patent application, soliciting the help of SRH Law intellectual property attorney, Justin McCabe, for guidance on global patent prosecution strategy and licensing. The patent is currently pending.

Renoun Ski Company appeared once before in the Justin McCabe’s Green Mountain IP blog.

Dunkiel Saunders congratulates Schenck and the Renoun Ski Company on the coverage and we look forward to seeing this new technology thrive in the ski industry.
